Maddie and Wally make their way through the afterlife behind the doors in an effort to find Simon. Meanwhile, Van Heidt continues to do everything he can to ensure the school is destroyed and he finally gets the land he’s always wanted.
Warning: Spoilers Below.
Through the Door
Maddie is walking around in the forest she saw as she entered her door at the end of the last episode. She’s trying to find Simon who hasn’t been since he was washed away by the water in the church scar. She keeps seeing doors along the path but isn’t reacting. While her spirit is in this world, her body in the real world is just wandering down a street. A car approaches her in a tunnel honking its horn. The car swerves to avoid hitting her and then stops. Maddie looks into the car and then climbs in. It’s unclear who was driving.

Back at the school, Charlie continues to melt down about Wally’s decision to take his door. Wally had told him that he would tell Charlie if he ever got his door. Rhonda tries to comfort Charlie by explaining his reasoning. Charlie explains that he already understands and supports Wally’s reasoning, he’s hurt that he wasn’t included after their decades together as spirits.
Saving the School
Claire, Nicole and Xavier are meeting with the school principal. They’ve recovered the information that proves the superintendent gets kickbacks if the school is torn down. Unfortunately, the principal is struggling to present the information in a compelling manner. Nicole gets a call from Livia. She thinks she’s about to be blackmailed when Livia informs her that she found Maddie wandering on the street. Nicole asks her to wait outside the hospital and sends Xavier down to get Maddie.

Back in the forest, Maddie runs into a familiar face. This time it’s Dawn, the theater ghost who got her door back in season one. Dawn is excited to see Maddie but relays that Janet told her that Maddie returned to the living world. Maddie explains the situation and says she’s looking for both Simon and Wally. Dawn agrees to help and warns about the mirrors they see along the way.
Along the Path
Wally is walking along the path looking for Simon to bring him back to the school. Wally sees a mirror and starts looking into it. He’s in a memory from his time in high school when he was the big man on campus. He seems to be forgetting why he’s in the forest until he sees Maddie in the mirror behind him. This pulls him back to the forest where he sees Maddie and Dawn. He reunites with his friends and continues searching for Simon.

On another part of the path, Simon is lost and confused. He doesn’t know who he is. He’s found by another spirit who crossed over, Janet. She’s trying to help him but he takes off in fear because he doesn’t recognize her. She gives chase trying to keep Simon from doing something that leads to unintended consequences. He wanders into a river and stares down at his reflection in it. Maddie, Dawn and Wally hear Janet calling Simon’s name and they follow the sound of her voice to the spot where they are. Janet explains that the reflections take them to good memories the same way the scars took them to bad ones. But it’s just as easy to get stuck in a reflection as it was a scar. Maddie needs to find a way to rescue Simon from himself.
Wandering Maddie
Livia takes Maddie’s body to the hospital where Xavier meets her. He takes her into the hospital and thanks Livia for saving her. Livia tells him she knows they don’t like her but it was the right thing to do and that matters to her. It’s clear that Livia hasn’t been fully engulfed by the spirit of her mother yet. There’s hope for a friendship with her down the line. Xavier and Dave are watching over her body, but Dave is wary of her vulnerable state. He suggests moving her around so no one can jump in her body again while she’s not in it.

While they are following the plot of The Godfather or Weekend at Bernie’s depending on if you ask Dave or Xavier, Maddie’s mom, Sandra, arrives at the hospital. She asks what’s going on and tells Xavier that Maddie told her everything. He explains the situation and tells Sandra her husband’s spirit is there. Sandra tells her husband to go bring their girl back. Dave knows what he must do. He has to take his door that Nurse Calver mentioned she knew he had found.
School Meeting
At the school, the council is meeting to hear the Superintendent’s motion for an expedited demolition of the school. The principal hasn’t been doing well in practice, so Claire and Nicole decide to take the charge. During the public comment section, the pair present evidence that the superintendent was working with Claire’s stepfather on a plan to demolish the school. When they make the revelation, they turn around to find Dr. Hunter-Price is not in her seat. Where is she?

In the hallway, Charlie and Yuri are making their way through when Dr. Hunter-Price walks through and tells them to move. The pair are shocked that she can see them. She hears and turns around revealing the Van Heidt ring. The spirit has taken over the superintendent’s body. The pair go to warn the other spirits and they are all aware it’s Van Heidt. They go to find a way to warn the school meeting but find the doors have been locked from the outside and they can’t get in. That’s when the spirits learn Van Heidt’s dastardly plan as he’s set the school on fire and trapped hundreds of people in the library.
Fighting the Fire
The spirits try to save the lives of all the people in the library but they know nothing they do will stop it where they are. Mr. Martin, Quinn and Rhonda head to the church scar. They figure they could give a warning during the short time where the veil is lifted as they pass through the library. But when they get to the scar, the pool is just a hole. Mr. Martin finds Ralph and asks him about it and Ralph fills the hole. They learn that Ralph could sense when people were dying and sent Mr. Martin to welcome those people into the afterlife so they didn’t have to experience it alone. Mr. Martin feels bad about having left Ralph alone but the pastor comes out and shows Ralph was never alone. Unfortunately, the fire is affecting the scar and the pastor is hit on the head and knocked out. Mr. Martin decides he’s going to stay with his friend.

Rhonda and Quinn go through the scar. They appear in front of everyone and warn about the fire and tell them to leave. Unfortunately, everyone is still stuck but they know and can work on a way to get out. Charlie and Yuri decide to take the water and fire extinguishers through the scar to help fight the fire. That helps but at a certain point, Charlie wonders if they are able to keep fighting the fire because it’s pierced the unseen veil and now they are in danger too.
Back to the Living World
In the forest, Maddie goes into the river to help pull Simon out of his reflection. She joins him looking at his reflection which takes them back to the previous Halloween and a great time they spent together. Maddie hears Janet and sees Wally and that pulls her out. She works to try to pull Simon to safety but his eyes have gone white just like the pastor.

Maddie is able to get through and bring Simon back to her. They start looking for Maddie's door to get back when Simon sees the pastor across the river. He’s with the eight children who drowned due to Van Heidt’s actions. He finally crossed over to spend eternity together. Maddie’s father Dave finds them and gets to hug his daughter for the first time in years. He brings them back to a door so Maddie and Simon can get back to the living world. The door closes once they are inside leaving Dave, Janet, Dawn and Wally in the forest.
Saving the Day
Once Maddie is back in her body, Xavier gets a call that the school is on fire and people are locked in the library. He and Maddie rush back to the school. No one has seen Simon since they went through the door and fell between worlds back to their bodies. Xavier and Maddie run into Alfred Van Heidt as Dr. Hunter-Price. They are prepared to stop Xavier and Maddie at all costs when suddenly a fire extinguisher hits them from behind. Simon is back in his body and has come to rescue his friends. Maddie hugs Simon while Xavier goes to direct the fire department where to go to help the others.

Afterward, the spirits are wondering about everyone not there anymore. Rhonda assures them they’ll go back in the scar when they have a chance to check on Mr. Martin. They also wonder what happened with Wally. Yuri says he wants to get some smokes that are hidden and Charlie tells him to take the shortcut since they are on the edge of the barrier. Yuri expects to go back into the building but instead he steps on asphalt to the shock of all the spirits.
School Closed
Due to the fire, the school is closed, so Maddie and Simon are finally getting to spend some time together as friends. They go to a horror movie, fitting. Maddie thinks she sees Wally before realizing it wasn’t him. Simon pulls her out of it before she can get lost in her thoughts. He suggests she get her mind off death by watching a movie about death.

Back at home, Sandra is cleaning a cleaver when Maddie returns. Sandra asks Maddie how she’s doing and Maddie says it’s been a weird couple of days. Sandra suggests Maddie get some rest while she goes to pull the curtains shut on the window. Sandra pulls a ring off her pinky and it’s the same ring that KC Jensen and Dr. Hunter-Price wore when possessed by Alfred Van Heidt. The reflection in the window shows Alfred Van Heidt has possessed Maddie’s mom as the season comes to an end.
What’s Next?
That was a hell of an ending that must set up a season four. As of this writing, no renewal has been announced, but that would be a hell of a cliffhanger to end a streaming show on when you can tell them much earlier if they have a high or low likelihood of renewal. We need to know how Van Heidt got into Sandra’s body. What happened in the three days between the fire and the movie? How far from the school can the ghosts go now? And is Dr. Hunter-Price back in her body? I would like all these questions answered.
