St. Hetty's Day 2: The Help

St. Patrick’s Day rolls back around meaning Hetty is once again visible and that causes major issues for Jay’s restaurant. Meanwhile, Bela is sleeping all the time and it has Jay worried about her mental health.

Warning: Spoilers below.

Visible Hetty

After discovering Hetty’s ghost power last year, it’s time for her to make her way back. Using Trevor’s much more useful ghost power, Hetty has reserved a table at Jay’s restaurant for St. Patrick’s Day. It appears that she’s going to have a date since she was able to mesmerize Jay’s cousin the previous year. Unfortunately, Hetty gets stood up. And that causes some major problems for Jay.

Stealing the show at Jay’s restaurant is his newest server, Jeff. This man is one of the best waiters they’ve had and is impressing a popular event planner who may start recommending it as a place for events. Unfortunately, Hetty takes out her frustration over being stood up on Jeff. She points out his lack of ring on his finger and he can’t hold it together. He departs leaving Jay and his crew in a lurch. But Hetty has an idea on how she can help Jay.

Joining the Working Class

Hetty, who was from the ruling class during her time and never worked a day in her life, decides to step up as a server. She can’t touch anything, so it doesn’t make sense but she thinks she can get through to the wedding planner whom she views as elite as well. Unfortunately, she struggles to remember the order. The restaurant’s cooks offer her a mnemonic device to remember the order. She uses a song and is able to remember. Everyone is excited.

Jay has managed to get Jeff back and Hetty feels heartbroken. She’s found a way to help. The rest of the kitchen staff stage a revolt to support Hetty. Jay ends up on the wrong side of a “Rudy.” He knows what he must do. He tells Jeff to not go back out and has Hetty finish the night. After celebrating a successful night, everyone wants Hetty to go party but she disappears right in front of them as the one day she’s visible comes to an end.

Love Triangle

In the B-story, Sam is going away and the ghosts need a babysitter, they are excited because Kyle is coming to watch them. Meanwhile, Bela is constantly taking naps. Jay thinks she’s depressed, so he has an idea. He suggests to Bela that she go on a date with Kyle. She’s fascinated with ghosts and Kyle has trouble with relationships due to seeing ghosts. Bela already knows about the ghosts, so he thinks it can work.

Bela reveals that she’s been sleeping a lot because she’s been dating Sas. The woman who was catfished by Trevor has now started dating the ghost that can appear in her dreams. It’s an odd choice, but the relationship is about to get rocky.

Bad Advice

Bela is getting serious and Sas wants to be serious. However, Trevor suggests that Sas be distant and cool to make Bela want it more rather than seem obvious. Sas takes the advice and it just angers Bela. She doesn’t want games, so she decides to take Jay’s advice and goes to talk to Kyle.

The pair are talking at the bar and seem to be hitting it off until Sas comes up and asks Kyle to relay his messages to Bela. Kyle decides to do it and Sas, being open and honest, appeals to Bela. She heads up to the mansion to take a nap, so he can use his power and they can be together, leaving Kyle all alone. Bummer not to end that story.

What’s Next?

This is the very definition of a half-and-half episode. Hetty’s story is a lot of fun. She gets to use her power. She experiences pain. She takes that pain out on an innocent person. She has to redeem herself, and does, before disappearing for the year. It’s a bit of a filler episode, but it works to use a rarely used ghost power while also not making Jay out to be a dope while being a “ghost dad.”

In contrast, the Bela storyline is garbage. She looks awful for her treatment of Kyle. Sas looks awful for his treatment of both Bela and Kyle, plus it seems very out of character for him. I hated this storyline. It wasn’t funny. It was just mean. I would rather have Carol back than see Bela right now. The writers have essentially assassinated her character. Go away. Bring back the fun part of ghosts.
