Soul Custody
Elias promises Jay everything he ever wanted but is ready to collect his soul. Now Jay is trying to do anything he can to save himself.
Warning: Spoilers Below

Jay in Fear
The episode starts with Jay fearing for his life. He has on old sports pads and says he’s ordered bubble wrap. He also discusses how he wants his storm trooper armor and wishes he had Mithril, giving viewers a nice look at Jay’s geeky side with Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings references. While doing this, Pete makes a The Devil Went Down to Georgia reference about a deal with the devil. Jay notices Sam tapping her toes. She calls it a nervous tic but she’s rather enjoying Pete, Isaac, Flower and Hetty dancing and singing the song.

Jay begins to spiral leading to him coming up with another plan to save his soul. He repairs the ghost trap and sets up a recliner from a dollhouse to be comfortable. His plan is to trap his soul in there when he dies until Sam can find a way to free him from the contract he signed with Elias. It’s far from a great plan, because it still requires him to die. But it’s the best plan he’s got. Unfortunately, Elias shows up in demon form to address Sam and Jay.
Elias’ Plans
Elias tells Sam and Jay that he’s being unfair to try to take Jay without living up to his end of the deal and giving Jay everything he ever promised him. He gets Jay on Amy Poehler’s podcast to promote his restaurant. When the episode is over, that’s when he will take Jay’s life and his soul down to Hell.

While this is going on, Elias flirts with Alberta. The other ghosts notice this and they hatch a plan that works with Jay’s plan for the ghost trap. They decide to try to get him to switch from his demon form to his ghost form to try to be with Alberta. Then, they will trap him in the ghost trap and get him to break the deal or eviscerate him.
Trapping Elias
While Elias is working with Jay’s publicist, Alberta starts making a move on Elias. She hints that she’s willing to be his paramour, but notes that nothing can happen because she can’t touch him while he’s in his demon form. He quickly switches back to ghost form, and Sam uses the ghost trap to catch him. Jay and Sam threaten to eviscerate him, but then everyone hears a voice they hadn’t heard in a while. Pete’s ex-wife, Carol, who died on the property in season three was in the ghost trap and will be eviscerated with Elias.

Elias tries to bargain, but the ghosts point out how terrible Carol was both in life and as a ghost, and Elias realizes he doesn’t have the bargaining chip he previously believed. Of course, Pete still has a good heart and refuses to vote to eviscerate his ex-wife. Jay also has a problem asking another soul to go to Hell in his place, so he frees Carol and Elias from the trap. Elias is now free and ready to strike.
Soul Sacrifice
As Elias sends objects at Jay, he uses an umbrella like a light saber to deflect the objects. It’s an homage to Luke Skywalker when he’s outmatched in the battle with Darth Vader on Cloud City. Meanwhile, Patience, the Puritan ghost has been having a crisis of conscience. She doesn’t understand why she didn’t go to heaven and doesn’t understand why an attempt to smite Elias earlier in the episode didn’t work. She offers her soul to Elias in exchange for Jay’s soul. She says she needs to “walketh the walk” and work to save Jay.

Elias agrees to the terms and opens a portal to Hell, but Patience chickens out before going down. Pete is willing to step up for Jay who is his best friend despite being on different planes of reality. He’s ready to shake Elias’ hand and go to Hell when Carol jumps in and shakes first. She’s sacrificing herself for Jay and for Pete who was always good to her even when she wasn’t good to him. She begins her descent to Hell, but then a bright light from above comes down and pulls her from the hole. Her sacrifice started with her “going down on us” and ended with her getting “sucked off” as she ascended rather than descended. Carol goes to Heaven, the deal has been honored since she was headed to Hell before getting sucked off, Jay is spared, and Patience realizes she would’ve gotten what she wanted had she gone through with the sacrifice. Oh well, can’t win them all.
What’s Next?
Carol is no longer on the show, which makes the show better, in my opinion. She was fine as a living character, but her death and then sticking around as a ghost was an unnecessary addition. She got more and more annoying, so it was great to see her go. The actress is wonderful, but the character was impossible to support. Plus, the added twist of her getting sucked off after starting to go down on the ghosts was not surprising but disappointing that she was the one chosen. Still, I’m glad Pete is still around and Patience adds more as a recurring character going forward, so it was a good choice.
I was wary about what to expect when the show returned. We’ve seen the backstories of pretty much all the ghosts, so a lot of the storylines have become how the ghosts themselves can disrupt Sam and Jay’s business. Some of those moves have been disappointing, but Elias proves to be a worthy foil. I enjoyed him as a demon interacting with Jay. I hope he returns in some way. Ghosts continues to deliver at a time when it could easily go off the rails.
