The surviving heroes must fight off the Nova Corps who are not here to help but rather quarantine Earth. And Kamala has to make a tough decision.

Warning: Spoilers Below

Nova Corps Attacks

The countdown at the end of the previous episode ends and the Nova Corps starts firing on the ship. Kamala has to bust out her Ms. Marvel powers to put a protective shield around the survivors when the ship is destroyed. She can’t control it and it breaks apart as they re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere. It appears like the survivors are going to die until portals start appearing under each one of them. The animation makes it look like BladeKnight is doing something to save them, but the revelation comes when Kamala goes through her portal and wakes up in Kamar Taj.

Kamar Taj

The sorcerers at Kamar Taj break down what happened during the Wakanda event. They reveal the energy from Black Panther and Thanos nearly destroyed the Earth until the Hulk stepped in and contained the energy. Now, Wanda Maximoff, the Queen of the Dead, is looking to take that energy from the Hulk. It’s unclear what she wants to do with it though. Kamala is worried about what this means for her going to the final battle as she knows Wanda wants her in connection to this plan. She’s worried that she has or will let everyone down, but Shang-Chi encourages her and helps her prepare to head into battle along with him, Katy, Valkyrie, BladeKnight, Spider-Man, and the rest of the sorcerers at Kamar Taj.

Battle of Paris

Wanda arrives in Paris where the Hulk is holding the Earth together and launches her attack. First she sends in the typical zombies but Hulk easily fights them off. Then, she sends in the zombie Atlanteans who make some headway but are still defeated. Next, she sends in the zombie giants, but again Hulk is able to fight them off. That’s when she brings in her secret weapon, the zombie Asgardians. These fighters are finally able to get to Hulk. When it appears all hope is lost, the survivors arrive from Kamar Taj and give Hulk the help he needs to keep fighting.

Zombie Battle

This is the moment the audience has been waiting to see. The survivors are putting up a good fight against Wanda’s team and that’s when she unleashes her secret weapon, their former allies. Zombie versions of Red Guardian, Yelena, Melena, Hank Pym, Hope Van Dyne, Jimmy Woo, Death Dealer and Thor join the fight and help give Wanda’s team an edge. BladeKnight is taken out by the zombie Asgardian god. Thor finally reaches Hulk but Banner is able to win the fight. Still, this is the break Wanda needed to begin siphoning Hulk’s power. Everything is up to Kamala now.

Kamala tries to fight Wanda but quickly learns she’s no match. She looks around and sees her friends all about to die. She reluctantly takes Wanda’s hand. Then, she wakes up in her apartment and Riri Williams and Kate Bishop are at her door. She goes outside to spend time with her friends but the serene view keeps dissipating and she sees her friends still fighting zombies. It’s clear Kamala is unsure which is real and which is fake, but she has to make a choice. She looks into the camera as the season, and possibly the series, comes to an end.

Conclusion

This was a great series with a lot of deaths that fits perfectly for both action and horror. It’s one of the best animated series I’ve seen from Marvel animation on Disney Plus. I enjoyed this far more than either What If…?, eyes of wakanda or Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. Only X-Men 97 tops this one for me. The one issue with a series like this is, as it is clearly set in an alternate universe, there’s both stakes and no stakes. Yes, it hurts to see your favorites die, and they likely won’t return in this universe, so there’s stakes. But it’s not the proper universe, so you can kill off anyone and it won’t hurt the other story, removing stakes. It’s odd but fits perfectly for this type of storytelling.

Now, I want to know what happens next. Does Kamala get back to the fight? Does she stay in the illusion and let Wanda win? Where are the people we haven’t seen from other corners of the MCU? Are they zombies too? Is it confined to Earth thanks to the Nova Corps’ quarantine? So many answers. I want more of this series, and based on interviews, so does Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum. Let’s hope there’s a season two, but if there isn’t, we’re good.
