KYLE
Pete meets another man, Kyle, who can see ghosts and brings him to Woodstone Manor. Kyle’s ability makes him popular with both Sam and the ghosts but leaves Jay feeling insecure.

Pete Meets Kyle
During one of Pete’s wanders away from home, he runs into another person who can see ghosts. The man’s name is Kyle and he’s tired of all the ghost shenanigans. Pete tries to talk to him and Kyle tells him he can’t bother him if he leaves the property. Kyle doesn’t know about Pete’s power, so Pete follows him and convinces Kyle to come to Woodstone Manor to surprise both Sam and the other ghosts.

Kyle walks in and Thorfinn, Isaac and Hetty mock his appearance until he responds, “at least I’m alive.” Kyle lets them know that he can see ghosts and that Pete put him up to it. The ghosts are excited to learn about another “freak” like Sam, and Sam is excited to talk to someone else who can see ghosts. Sam and Kyle go to bond and this starts freaking Jay out.
Sam Hires Kyle
Jay is trying to shrug off his jealousy when Bela shows up and talks to him about what’s going on. She only heightens his insecurities. Jay keeps saying he has nothing to worry about, but Bela points out that she cheated on many of her boyfriends with less of a connection than Sam has with Kyle. Jay tells himself that it’s just for a few days until Sam comes down and says she’s hired Kyle to help at both the bed and breakfast and with ghost stuff.

Jay’s jealousy takes over and he starts digging up dirt on Kyle. He finds that Kyle spent time in prison, but Kyle tells a heartwarming story about an elderly woman he died before being able to give a locket to her daughter and he went to get the locket and was arrested for breaking and entering. Sam is angry at Jay’s jealousy and goes to apologize to Kyle. Kyle shares that his ability causes him to struggle to have meaningful relationships. Sam understands but when Kyle goes to kiss her, she palms him. Jay apologizes to Sam for his jealousy. Sam admits Kyle tried to kiss her and apologizes for not understanding Jay’s jealousy. They reconnect despite there being some clear underlying issues due to Sam’s ability.
Sas and Joan
In the B-plot, Sas and Joan keep bonding and Joan suggests she’s ready for “something else.” Sas figures out she’s hinting at something intimate and tries to psych himself up for what she’s suggesting. He meets with Thorfinn, Flower and Trevor who all try to give him advice. This causes Sas to freak out as he doesn’t feel ready. Trevor tries to smooth things over by having Sas use his room since Sas actually shares a room with Thorfinn. But Sas overcompensates while trying to act macho like Thorfinn and accidentally throws Joan out of the house.

She comes back in and after a while finds Sas to talk to him about his fears and insecurities. She assures him that she’s crazy about him just the way he is, and there’s no reason for him to act like Thorfinn or Trevor for her. They are about to connect when Pete makes his presence known so he can get out of the room, since Pete is Trevor’s roommate. Later, Sam, Jay and the ghosts are waiting downstairs when Sas walks in and gives a big smile and “oh yeah!” Everyone, living or ghosts, celebrates Sas.
Rating
This episode digs deeper into underlying issues for Sam and Jay. It’s clear they love each other, but Sam’s connection to the ghosts is taking a toll on them. Jay is dependent on Sam to tell him anything ghostly that happens. Meanwhile, the ghosts’ constant need for attention from Sam is hurting her ability to connect with others. Jay is there all the time and understands. Bela knows about the ghosts. But very few others will understand. She’s loosely connected with family members of the ghosts who have stopped by but when the ghosts try to reach from beyond, Sam ends up in the middle and is usually the one who receives the brunt of the punishment. Sam needs more. It’ll be interesting to see how the creators give her more without her always having to be the go-between.
