The Devil Went Down to Woodstone

It’s the season finale. Sam’s publisher holds a party for her book release at Jay’s restaurant. Patience returns, sensing a demonic presence. And Elias Woodstone also reveals himself as an agent for the Devil and someone’s soul is on the line.

Publishing Party

Ain’t no party like a publishing party. Originally, Sam and Jay were supposed to go into New York City to celebrate the publishing of Sam’s book about Isaac’s life. Of course, it’s been changed from an historical piece to a Young Adult Vampire novel. Sam and Jay try to keep Isaac in the dark so he doesn’t feel hurt by the fact that he can’t go to the party. Of course, Pete has been roaming with Kyle, the man who sees ghosts we met in the last episode, and Kyle told Pete about the party. Pete accidentally reveals to Isaac about the party which leaves him hurt.

The ghosts ask Sam to try to have the party moved so Isaac can attend. Sam manages to get the party moved to Jay’s restaurant. This means Sam gets a party for her book being published, Jay gets more eyes on his restaurant and Isaac can attend the party for the book about his life. Everything looks like it’s coming up roses for Sam and Jay, but Patience has returned from the dirt where she says she can feel the presence of the devil on the grounds.

Patience Returns

Patience heads down to the restaurant where her mere presence freaks out Sam which, in turn, freaks out Jay. Sam tries to dissuade Patience from doing anything rash but she freaks out about vampires since they are “undead,” even though she’s a ghost. Jay comes out with deviled eggs he plans to serve at the party but the name leads to Patience freaking out. Sam tells Patience she’ll cancel the party while the other ghosts take her back up to the mansion as she still senses the devil’s presence.

The ghosts take her to Hetty and Alberta who realize they have to do whatever they can to make sure Patience doesn’t head back to the restaurant. Hetty tells Patience about Alberta’s “lustful feelings” for Pete and how he rejected her. Patience decides to gather the basement ghosts as witnesses for Alberta’s confession. Alberta reveals that she has feelings for Pete and they existed before he was taken but she pushed him away. Pete overhears and immediately leaves the property, upsetting Alberta. Unfortunately, Jay’s sister, Bela, walks through the room talking on the phone to her boyfriend about how they tricked Patience and this leads to Patience heading back down to the party.

Devilish Presence

Patience returns to the party to find Sam reading from the book. She decides to use her powers to try to freak everyone out. But when the blood appears on the walls, it only heightens Sam’s reading since she’s reading about a vampire. Those in attendance applaud and Jay tries to play it off like it was planned despite the fact that he and Bela are freaked out. Still, Sam gets a round of applause.

Later, a journalist comes over and tells Jay how much she loved the place and will be giving it a good review. She mentions that his publicist has been hyping him up, and that’s when Elias Woodstone walks over. Sam freaks out at the sight of him and the ghosts explain to her that he is now an agent of Hell looking for souls. He explains that Jay will have all his dreams come true but his soul now belongs to the devil. Jay wants his soul back, but Elias hints that he could die at any time. This sets Jay up to be very scared of everything by the end of the episode and pushes forward to the main conflict of season five.

Rating

This season brought a lot of growth for almost every character. Sam, Jay, Pete, Sas, Trevor and Isaac all moved their stories along. There were even small bits of change for Hetty, Thorfinn, Flower and Alberta. The season even brought in two new ghosts who both worked in the limited capacity within which they were introduced. And Elias Woodstone is proving to be a Big Bad who can show up one or two times a season and wreak havoc in a way few others could. Four seasons in and Ghosts still hits more often than it misses.
