300th Night
As the cadets get ready to mark the end of the first year and the dedication of the new seat of the Federation, Caleb finally finds messages from his mother. He, along with three others, go to find her and it creates a situation where Ake, Reno and the Doctor have to leave Federation space to go save them.
Warning: Spoilers Below
Klingon Ritual
Jay-Den is inviting his friends to be a part of his new chosen family. They take part in a beverage and recite a Klingon oath. Genesis, Daram and Ocam quickly drink and join. Sam notes as a Kasqian she doesn’t actually drink, but Jay-Den encourages her to recite the pledge. Caleb passes on both as he’s not much for joining anywhere. He runs into Tarima in the turbolift and the pair engage in awkward banter that Tarima calls out as not matching their previous relationship and how she had to kill several Furies to save Caleb and the rest of the away team on the Miyazaki. They are forced apart when more cadets enter the turbolift.

Caleb returns to his room where SAM jumps in and calls him out in a similar manner to Tarima. SAM is feeling out of place as she now has two sets of memories, her experiences before the last episode and the 17 years of development she experienced in two weeks on Kasq. She talks about Caleb’s mother and his attempts to find her. He tells her to think like a child and he finally remembers something that could be an encrypted code. He finds two years of messages from her including her current location and it’s under threat from the Venari Ral.
Stolen Weapons
Admiral Vance reaches out to Chancellors Ake and Kelrec to reveal what Nus Baraka and the Venari Ral stole during the pirate raid at the Miyazaki. He stole Omega 47 mines. These mines are powerful enough to kill billions of people and wipe out warp travel. An attack with these can send many worlds back into the same situation they were in during The Burn.

Caleb approaches Ake to tell her about what he’s found but he overhears everything Ake and Kelrec are saying about the Venari Ral, the weapons they stole and the movement the Federation is making with its ships. He decides not to reveal anything about his mother and take care of it himself. Instead of continuing with the rest of the Academy to Betazed for the dedication, he decides to steal a shuttle and go save his mother.
Along for the Ride
While Caleb finds a shuttle and decides the best way to steal it and to get to the world where his mother is quicker, SAM zaps in and decides to come for a ride. She knows how to calculate how to get through a warp bubble. Genesis is doing her duties on the shuttle bay when she catches them. Meanwhile, Daram wobbles in drunk from the Klingon drink from earlier because his species lacks the enzyme to break down alcohol. He’s happy to go along but Genesis is going to report them. SAM locks her in because she won’t let Genesis ruin her chance to break some rules and learn more about themselves.

They get the shuttle out of the Athena while traveling at warp speed and, with SAM’s help, through the warp bubble. Unfortunately, their shuttle has taken on damage and they can’t leave the planet. Genesis, Daram and SAM work to find replacement parts while Caleb goes to find his mother. They are trying to get off the planet before the Venari Ral take over. It’s an old fashioned Star Trek search party.
Anisha Returns
Caleb gets noticed by a ruffian who puts a knife to his throat. She pulls his face covering off and realizes who he is. She removes hers and it’s Caleb’s mother, Anisha. They find cover and talk about everything that happened over the past 16 years since Starfleet separated them. Anisha talks about how Nus Baraka helped her escape prison, but she quickly fled as she wanted no part of the life that cost her time with her son.

While catching up, Anisha quickly turns as she expects someone to appear. It’s SAM who quickly opens the door to let Genesis and Daram in. Anisha knows the Venari Ral have spies all over the place, so she wants to see their finger nails. They are all polished due to being Starfleet which makes her wary of them, even though she doesn’t know they are Starfleet. While they are hiding, an announcement comes in that the Venari Ral have taken over. Anisha goes to get her and Caleb transported off-world. The other cadets are angry that Caleb is going to leave them.
Edge of Federation Space
As they approach Betazed, Tarima goes to find Caleb. She finds Jay-Den who has a message that Caleb has gone to find his mother. Tarima knows this is bad and she and Jay-Den quickly go tell Chancellor Ake. Ake is meeting with Commander Reno who is trying to figure out the next place the Venari Ral will be detonating an Omega 47 bomb. They get in touch with Admiral Vance to discuss what’s happening with four cadets now in danger.
Michael Gibson/Paramount+
Vance tells them to drop off the cadets on Betazed then head to the edge of Federation space nearest the planet. From there, they will need to work to get their cadets back. Ake, Reno and the Doctor are the only three officers on the ship as they head to the planet. Once they arrive, they learn of stowaways. Tarima knows of a design flaw that’s set up to ensure she and Jay-Den could stay on the Athena without being detected. They are confined to the Captain’s quarters who informs Starfleet they are missing two more cadets.
Escaping the Planet
Caleb does everything he can to push his new friends away but SAM breaks through with a hug. She knows he loves them. He still heads off with his mother while they try to get back to their shuttle. They can’t transport and Venari Ral quickly figure out how to track the transporter signal and surround the three cadets. Anisha and Caleb hear they are surrounded and Caleb heads out to help them. Anisha does her best to distract the Venari Ral but the pirates are curious about the Starfleet tech. Caleb shows up and claims the tech is being sold in the area, but he has a plan.

He’s had his communicator activated, so everything he says is being relayed to the Athena. Chancellor Ake is able to hear everything, so she knows where to go to save her cadets. A fight breaks out and Anisha is shot, but the Athena reveals itself to get into range. Starfleet is able to teleport the four cadets and Caleb’s mother on board the ship. The Doctor takes Caleb and his mother to sick bay while Ake and Reno have the other cadets take stations on the bridge to try to get back to Federation space.
Blockade
The Starfleet officers and cadets are caught by the Venari Ral and Chancellor Ake has to make a bold move to keep them safe. She calls on Commander Reno to separate the saucer section from the rest of the ship so they can warp away. Reno is shocked by the command as it’s something not often seen in Star Trek (and a nice callback to the first episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.) It works and Ake plans to get her ship back but they have a bigger issue.
Michael Gibson/Paramount+
They arrive at the age of Federation space and find Omega 47 mines set up everywhere. Braka has boxed all Federation ships within their own space, except one, the Athena. He plans to rule everywhere outside Federation space by trapping them in with the blockade. Reno tries to get a MayDay through the blockade, but alas, it’s for naught. Meanwhile, Ake heads down to sickbay to meet with Anisha Mir, the woman she separated from her son 16 years prior.
What’s Next?
This was a wild and exciting episode to set up the season finale. Caleb’s mission has been to find his mother and he does, but now she’s injured and on a Starfleet vessel, one of the last places she ever wanted to be. Daram, Genesis, SAM, Jay-Den and Tarima all risk their lives and their positions to be there for their friend, even if it was against Genesis’ will. And Ake, Reno and the Doctor’s decision to leave Federation space to save their cadets’ lives have them stranded outside a bubble but still in a unique position that could help them pushback against the Venari Ral. You can really tell that Jonathan Frakes directed this episode. And after back to back character development episodes, including one that could have been the cold open of a better character development episode, this episode needed the action that Frakes delivers.
