Ko'Zeine

The cadets from Starfleet Academy and the War College are getting time away from school to celebrate All Worlds Day. But one cadet wants to stay at school while another secretly returns to try to cover up part of her past. A third cadet has to answer to his responsibilities and a fourth ends up in an unusual situation.

Warning: Spoilers Below.

Heading Home

The Academy is closing for four days to celebrate the holiday known as All Worlds Day. Several of the cadets are going home. Jay-Den looks to be going on a vacation with Kyle. Meanwhile, Caleb is pushing back against Chancellor Ake’s decision to pair him with a host family. He wants to just stay at the Academy while everyone else is gone. He’s been struggling to write to Tarima, constantly erasing messages he has for her.

Meanwhile, Genesis and Sam are both getting ready to depart. SAM says she’s going to a holo-reengineering clinic. She needs to fix glitches she’s been experiencing since the incident on the Miyazaki. Just before Genesis leaves, Chancellor Ake pulls her aside to tell the cadet that she is being recommended for a command path. Genesis seems excited about the potential. Daram is also preparing to go home when he’s suddenly taken. Jay-Den sees this and follows him since he doesn’t know what’s happening and is worried about his classmate.

Khionian Realm

It’s revealed the people who apparently kidnapped Daram are his friends from his homeworld. He’s been betrothed to the future queen. They had an arrangement that would allow him to serve time in Starfleet before he had to return home to serve as King, but changes at home have escalated the timeline. The Khionians see Jay-Den and are ready to defend themselves when Daram says the Klingon will serve as his Ko’Zeine, essentially his best man.

Jay-Den doesn’t want to be there and wants to go back to his vacation but chooses to stay out of loyalty to Daram. The pair continue to fight over duty and service. Jay-Den notes how Daram is nothing at home like he is at the Academy and he thinks he’s not his true self in his homeworld. Daram denigrates some of Jay-Den’s decisions which leads to Jay-Den leaving Daram alone, despite the fact he’s supposed to give a speech.

Back at the Academy

Caleb thinks he and Commander Reno are the only two at the Academy when Genesis returns. She claims her father was called away on a diplomatic mission, so she decided to return early. She and Caleb spend some time together where they play a game called “toxic or non-toxic” where they try to identify stuff in the Doctor’s sickbay. A toxic warp slug gets free and the pair have to go chasing it while avoiding Commander Reno. They also discuss Genesis being on a command path and decide to break into the bridge, so Genesis can sit in the chair. She also tries to do something shady and Caleb catches her.

Unfortunately, Commander Reno also catches both of them. That means Chancellor Ake must be called back to discipline them. Genesis reveals that she forged some of the letters of recommendation on her transcript. She didn’t like what they said and changed them to be more complimentary. Ake takes her off the command path and gives them menial labor and academic probation as a punishment.

Daram’s Wedding

Daram goes through with his wedding to the future queen. When it’s time for the Ko’Zeine speech, Daram gets up to tell everyone there won’t be one when Jay-Den returns. He gives a speech highlighting Daram’s virtues and all the ways he’s seen Daram grow in the time they have known each other. It’s a sincere, heartfelt speech that shows their growing bond.

That speech ends up being what frees Daram from his responsibilities. His bride mentions how he’s never been like that in the time they were growing up. She doesn’t think he’s joining her because he wants to be home but out of duty. She doesn’t want that for him. She also admits to dreaming that she always wanted to be the first female ruler of their home world without a King, now she can do that by having their marriage annulled. That will allow him to return to Starfleet giving both of them what they want.

What’s Next?

This was a character development episode and those have the possibility of being the best episodes of a season… but also the worst. This may be my least favorite episode so far. I liked Caleb and Genesis building their friendship. Unfortunately, they felt more like a relationship than Caleb and Tarima ever have. That could be detrimental depending on what happens moving forward. I like seeing Daram and Jay-Den bond, but this probably should’ve happened a little later in the season run. This really needed to be character development in the wake of B’Avi’s death and Tarima’s injury. Unfortunately, this felt like they were glossing over them. It had good moments but could’ve been a lot better.
