the proposal
Jay’s sister, Bela, is expecting a proposal from her boyfriend, but her infatuation with the ghosts leads to hijinks and shenanigans. Meanwhile, Isaac continues looking for ways to be accepted by the basement ghosts, so he can win the representative election against Flower.
Warning: Spoilers Below
Sam’s Meddling
Bela tells Sam and Jay that Eric has been dropping signs about a potential proposal. He’s been encouraging her to get her nails done. He subtly asked about her ring size and he’s planning on flying to the bed and breakfast the next day. Bela is excited as she’s in her 30s and looking to settle down and get married. However, Sam decides she wants Bela to have the proposal she didn’t have and starts meddling.
Sam calls Eric and convinces him to make it a surprise. So, he tells Bela he’s not going to make it the next day. Sam is excited because she’s excited for the surprise and hopes it gives her a leg up on being Bela’s Maid of Honor. But Jay warns against the meddling, telling Sam it’s likely to blow up in her face.

Bela’s Dream
While this has been going on, Sass has been anxiously awaiting Joan’s return, the wandering ghost he’s been dating. He hasn’t seen her since they consummated their relationship. She was supposed to return during this timeframe, but she hasn’t and Sass wonders if she’ll return. Bela is now disappointed because she thinks Eric is backing out of the proposal. Sass enters her dream and the two hook up. Bela explains this to Sam and Jay who say it will likely hurt Eric. All of them are unaware that Eric is hiding in the room.

There was a dishwasher delivery to the restaurant earlier. Eric arrived and installed the dishwasher for Jay and decided to hide in the box to surprise Bela like Sam suggested. He now knows that she cheated in her dream and he’s hurt by everything that’s going on. He goes off to think about the situation. It’s unusual, because Bela has technically not cheated because it was a dream. However, she has already been catfished by Trevor, tried to have Eric possessed by Trevor and then hooked up with Sass when he used his ghost power to enter her dream. Something’s clearly not right.
Bela and Eric Make a Decision
While Eric is thinking about what he wants to do going forward, Sass returns to Bela’s dreams and encourages her to return to Eric. Jay finds his sister moping in the restaurant and she tells him she’s fearful she’s going to have to start over and find a new guy. Jay notes that it sounds like she’s afraid of ending up alone and is instead settling and she may not love Eric. Bela realizes the situation and accepts the truth but feels bad that she’s going to break up with Eric now.

This leads to one of the funnier moments of this heavier story. Eric is once again hiding because he’s accepted Bela for her quirks and has decided to move forward with a proposal. He’s again hiding in a box and has overheard the entire conversation. To make matters worse, his parents have flown in to support his proposal and they are also hiding, meaning they also heard the entire conversation. AWKWARD!!!
Fight Club
In the B-plot, Isaac is still fighting to be accepted by the basement ghosts, so he can challenge Flower to be the ghost representative to Sam. Unfortunately, the basement is not the most comfortable place to be, because they have to sleep standing up. He waits until they are all asleep before sneaking upstairs to sleep on the couch. Unfortunately, Nancy wakes up hoping Jay’s made himself a midnight snack she can smell and finds Isaac not sleeping downstairs and tells him he’ll never be their representative.

Isaac keeps fighting for support and Nancy tells him if he wants an endorsement, he has to compete in Fight Club. The basement ghosts have their own underground Fight Club where the biggest and the baddest of the ghosts who died of cholera takes on challengers. Apparently, of the upstairs ghosts, only Pete knew about this. Isaac challenges Trunk and takes a severe beating. Meanwhile, the basement ghosts and Pete cheer on the carnage. Isaac licks his wounds and seems to have accepted defeat when Nancy tells him the other ghosts were impressed with him taking a beating and have decided to support him in the representative election. HUZZAH FOR ISAAC!
What’s Next?
Political season is heating up on Ghosts, and it’s clear Isaac wants revenge for his primary loss to a sober Flower. He’s carpetbagging with the basement ghosts and has their support. It’s almost like Alan Keyes jumping into the Illinois Senate race just to lose to Barack Obama. Plus, the Fight Club provides some of the best humor since the Porsche episode.
Of course, Ghosts nails the heart with a sweet moment between Jay and Bela as he wants his sister to be happy and not settle. The show has shown how Eric is a genuinely good boyfriend but isn’t what Bela wants in a husband. It’s sad for Eric and hilarious that his parents overheard it while hiding in boxes. But they are pushing to something better. The story keeps advancing without jumping the shark which is hard to do five seasons into a series. Here’s hoping it keeps going.
