T-Daddy

Trevor tries to be a parent from beyond the grave, but he struggles with supporting his daughter’s college dreams. Meanwhile, Jay’s employees start trying to unionize while he’s struggling financially.

Warning: Spoilers below.

Ghost Dad

Trevor tries to give his daughter a Porsche which upsets Jay because a ghost has more money than he does. Abby says she can’t accept the car, but Trevor has set it up in a way that Sam and Jay can’t sell the Porsche. Eventually, Sam tries to move the Porsche and becomes so infatuated with it that she starts trying to use it as often as she can. This includes giving Abby a ride in the car while asking about what she wants to do, so that Trevor can help his daughter not drift aimlessly.

The engine is too loud and Sam drives too fast, so she thinks Abby says she wants to study finance. She tells Trevor who is proud his daughter wants to follow in his footsteps. He’s shocked his friend, who has raised Abby, won’t pay for her tuition, so he offers to pay for college. This is when she reveals she wants to study poetry in France rather than study finance. Now, Trevor is scared of what this means for his daughter.

Disgruntled Workers

While Trevor is flashing the money, Jay’s restaurant is struggling. His employees are seeking raises and health benefits, something he can’t provide at the moment. He is wearing pants that a former Bed and Breakfast guest left behind. He tells his employees they are barely getting by and they seem to understand right up until they see Sam pick up Abby in the Porsche to discuss her future.

The employees now believe that Jay is lying about being able to pay them more, so they discuss unionization. They go on strike outside the restaurant with Flower marching with them since she loves a good protest. Hetty, of course, comes from a time before labor unions and workers’ rights, so she’s appalled by what’s happening. Flashbacks show her having to deal with an attempt to unionize by her employees, most of whom were children in the 1800s. She tries to figure out a way to help Jay.

Solutions

Trevor tries to use Bela to convince Abby not to go study in France by sharing her life stories, but Sam walks in and explains what’s going on. Abby is frustrated with Trevor, but Sam steps in and facilitates a conversation. Abby explains that it’s risky but since both her biological father and her mother died young, she just wants to live her life. This convinces Trevor who says he’ll sell the Porsche to pay for her college. Sam tries to protect the Porsche but has to give it up for Abby’s future.

Meanwhile, the restaurant employees continue picketing even after the Porsche is sold. Jay needs to find a way to pacify them. Hetty says she managed to stop the union in the 1800s by giving fake titles with no bump in pay or benefits. Sam thinks it won’t work, but Jay recognizes that his employees are not much different than children and gives them silly titles. Nothing exemplifies more that his employees aren’t that bright than one of them wanting to be Vice President of Chips.

What’s Next?

This is one of the best developments on Ghosts this season. Trevor has shown a growth as a person/ghost since learning he has a child. He was a bit immature and acted even more immature to cover for some of his qualities that may have held him back in the business world had he lived. But now he’s growing and learning and his interactions with his daughter help make him a stronger character.

Meanwhile, Jay’s restaurant is almost always a fun turn on the show. His employees bring a lot of new humor that help the show get stronger. This has been one of my favorite episodes of season 5.
