Halloween 5: The Mummy

Sam and Jay get ready to host a haunted house on Halloween and find a sarcophagus with a mummy inside. This mummy’s ghost brings more terror to Woodstone and causes major issues for Sam, Jay and Hetty.

Warning: Spoilers below.

Moving the Mummy

The episode begins in Egypt where excavators are separating a pair of mummies. The villagers say a curse will be placed upon those who separate the pair. Back in the present day, Sam and Jay are getting ready to host a haunted house for Halloween, and Jay is showing off his new vegetables for his farm to table service at his restaurant. They go down to the basement where they find the sarcophagus and a mummy missing a toe.

The ghost of the mummy comes from the sarcophagus and tells them who he is and how he will bring a curse down on the Woodstones who moved him away from his beloved. The ghosts cover for Hetty, who actually ate the toe, and Sam who is a Woodstone descendant, and don’t let on who they are. Unfortunately, Nancy, one of the basement ghosts hears about a new ghost and comes up. When the mummy asks about a picture of Hetty, Nancy lets it spill that she’s a Woodstone and now the mummy is on the hunt.

Mummy’s Curse

The mummy approaches Sam where the ghosts inform her that he knows Hetty is a Woodstone. Unfortunately, when she tells Jay, he unwittingly admits that Sam’s a Woodstone in front of the mummy. This leads to the mummy unleashing the curse on the house as the haunted house is underway. Sam and Jay flee with the ghosts to the bathroom to ward off the mummy. The ghosts realize they aren’t in danger, because they are already dead. Unfortunately, for Sam and Jay, that’s not the case.

As they work to fight off the curse, eventually they use a tool at their disposal that wasn’t available for generations past: the internet. They look up where the mummy’s beloved was moved and will reach out to the museum where she’s at to reunite them. He accepts the terms and Pete goes with him to perform the ceremony that frees his beloved and allows the pair to roam the museum grounds.

Nigel’s Wish

In the background, Nigel knows that ghosts have come back on Halloween due to a seance. He decides he will ask Sam to bring back Chris, the exotic dancer who died during a bachelorette party on the grounds. He thinks Chris was “sucked off” because Isaac claimed that happened after Nigel and Chris spent time together. In truth, Chris immediately left the property as soon as he learned he could and Isaac wanted to spare Nigel’s feelings. Isaac tries to convince Nigel it’s not possible because they need something that belongs to the ghost, but Flower reminds them that Sam kept some phallic shaped straws Chris brought for the party.

Nigel approaches Sam about the seance while the mummy’s plagues are attacking, so she tells Nigel the truth. He confronts Isaac who admits to the lie and tells Nigel he still cares about his feelings even if the pair aren’t together anymore. Isaac tells Nigel that Chris will return at Christmas but immediately admits that’s a lie and he doesn’t know why he said it.

What’s Next?

This episode was a nice Halloween special, but it did very little to advance the current storylines. The most we really got was Jay being worried about his farm-to-table vegetables being ravaged by mummy plagues. It seems odd they wouldn’t have found a sarcophagus until season five. The Nigel storyline was more intriguing than the mummy storyline just because it advanced something. Maybe Chris will return. Maybe the Christmas lie was actually foreshadowing. Maybe it’s a throwaway that’s still more entertaining than the mummy.

It would be a fine diversion from the main storyline, but it’s set up inside the main storyline making it feel unnecessary. It was kind of funny but not great and, honestly, it was the weakest Halloween episode they’ve given us.
