Trust Fall
Hal Jordan remains in Nebraska, determined to uncover the truth behind the aliens' arrival and their connection to William Macon’s farm. Meanwhile, John Stewart heads back to Coast City to retrieve Hal’s real lantern, where he discovers that the Guardians of Oa may be concealing the truth about a troubling event on the aliens’ homeworld.

More Training
The episode returns to the 2016 investigation, with Hal continuing his unconventional approach to training John. His latest lesson is simple but vague. He tells John to fly, offering little guidance beyond telling him to think about flying and let the ring do the rest. John is unable to get himself airborne, instead managing to create a bird just before the ring loses its charge.

Hal then gives John a new assignment: return to Coast City and retrieve the lantern needed to recharge the ring. John quickly realizes Hal had already arranged his flight, making it clear that sending him away had been part of the plan all along. Even so, Hal finds a way to turn the trip into another lesson by challenging John to keep his bird construct from disappearing.
Community Meeting
While John makes his way to Coast City, Hal continues looking for answers from Sheriff Kane. He attends a community meeting, where William Macon’s lawyer and son, Billy Macon, approaches him with some unexpected news: all of Hal’s charges have been dropped, and he is free to leave. Hal appreciates the help but has no intention of going anywhere just yet. His decision creates more tension with the sheriff, who once again threatens him. Before the confrontation can go any further, however, Hal leaves to take a call from John, who is still trying to locate the lantern.

Meanwhile, John arrives at Hal’s Coast City home and discovers that the Green Lantern apparently has an expensive, massive house that is filled with surprisingly little furniture. While searching the property, John finds the dimensional portal where Hal has hidden the lantern and grabs a suit for him as well. He also takes some food outside for Earl, Hal’s carnivorous plant and unusual pet. It is becoming increasingly clear that Hal and John are approaching this situation from very different perspectives, but neither of them realizes just how much trouble is waiting for them.
Alien Detectors
Hal sneaks into the morgue to retrieve the alien remains and brings them to the football field for further examination. There, he discovers that what initially appears to be a security camera is actually sophisticated technology capable of identifying aliens. After considering everything that has happened since his arrival, including William Macon’s initial eagerness to speak with him about the other alien and his sudden desire to get Hal out of town, Hal becomes convinced that Macon is at the center of the mystery.

Sheriff Keene stops Hal and reveals that she knows about the aliens. The two eventually make their way to Macon’s farm, where Hal confronts him about the technology and demands some answers. Macon refuses to explain himself and instead reveals that a sniper has Hal in his sights. Despite the warning, Hal refuses to back down and is promptly shot.
Alien Revelations
In Coast City, John is captured by a group of aliens searching for information about the Manhunter. They explain that the Guardians created the Manhunters before establishing the Green Lantern Corps. These synthetic beings are capable of taking the form of any species, allowing them to infiltrate communities and destroy them from within.

According to the aliens, the Manhunters were responsible for a genocide on their homeworld, and they believe one of them is now hiding in Nebraska. John is given 48 hours to identify the Manhunter and turn it over. If he fails, they threaten to destroy the small town of Rushville.
Escaping the Hospital
Hal survives the sniper attack and recovers in the hospital, where he and Sheriff Kane discuss the assault on the aliens at the football game. Hal points out that Kane seems different from everyone else in town, prompting her to reveal that she originally came from Gotham before settling in Nebraska. Considering Gotham is located in New Jersey in the DC Universe, her accent is a strange choice. It sounds neither like Nebraska nor New Jersey, instead coming across as more Canadian or Minnesotan. Since the actress is Scottish, the mismatch is particularly noticeable.

John returns the lantern to Hal and fills him in on what he learned about the Manhunters. Although John has no idea what they are, he explains that the Green Lanterns investigated the genocide on the aliens’ homeworld and promised to execute the Manhunter responsible. That execution never happened. Hal puts the pieces together and suspects Abin-Sur, the Green Lantern who possessed his ring before him, was the one who captured the Manhunter. If so, the Manhunter may have killed Abin-Sur before the ring ultimately chose Hal. There is only one person Hal can think of who might have the answers he needs. He heads to a prison to meet his former mentor, Sinestro.
Final Thoughts
The mystery is starting to come together, but there are still plenty of possibilities. Who is the Manhunter that apparently killed Abin-Sur and ultimately turned Hal Jordan into a Green Lantern? William Macon remains the obvious suspect because of how eccentric he is. However, he could simply be protecting someone who allows him to live the unusual life he wants while genuinely being the steward of the property where his farm sits. His wife and son are also strange enough to warrant suspicion, although they come across more like quirky small-town residents than synthetic beings capable of genocide. Then there’s Sheriff Kane, whose claim that she’s from Gotham makes her the biggest wildcard of the group. She clearly doesn’t fit in with the rest of the town.
The more interesting mystery might be Hal’s relationship with John. The two clearly don’t get along, and that Sinister Sinestro (as the old Super Friends cartoon called him, just in case anyone needed extra help understanding that he’s evil) has already suggested that the Manhunter may be the least of Hal’s problems. His attention toward John only makes that warning more ominous.
This series is delivering the combination of mystery and superhero storytelling that I enjoy, and I’m genuinely curious to see where all of these threads eventually lead.
