Marvel and Disney+ are diving back into the world of Special Presentations with The Punisher: One Last Kill. It’s the third Disney+ special after Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.
This story follows Frank Castle as he struggles with his mental health after finally completing the mission that has defined his life: avenging the murders of his family.

Frank Castle’s Mental Health Struggles
The emotional core of the special is Frank’s mental state.
After years of violence, Frank has finally eliminated every crime family connected to the arms deal that led to his wife and children being killed. But instead of peace, he’s left empty and directionless.
Throughout the special, Frank hallucinates conversations with people from his past, including friends from The Punisher, his wife and children, marines with which he served and Karen Page.

The hallucinations constantly challenge him. They accuse him of pretending he wants a normal life while secretly craving violence and war.
One of the most powerful moments comes at his family’s gravesite. Frank pulls out a gun and considers ending his life so he can “join” them. He ultimately decides not to pull the trigger, and that decision shapes the rest of the special.
Crime Takes Over the Streets
Frank’s final mission may have made things worse.
The crime family he wiped out had apparently been keeping smaller gangs in check. Without them, the neighborhood spirals into chaos.
One especially brutal scene shows a thug attacking a homeless man before throwing the man’s dog into traffic, killing it instantly. During the attack, Frank appears completely detached from reality, mentally reliving old battles instead of noticing the violence around him.

Later, Frank is confronted by the last surviving member of the Gnucci family: Ma Gnucci.
She draws comparisons between herself and Frank. Both lost their families. The difference is that Frank was responsible for hers.
She reveals that Frank killed her youngest son in front of her, even though he wasn’t involved in the criminal business. According to her, his final act was trying to protect his mother.
Now she wants Frank to suffer the same pain she experienced.
Brutal Action Takes Center Stage
The second half of the special becomes a full-scale siege.
Criminals swarm Frank’s apartment building, attacking residents and tearing through the neighborhood in an attempt to overwhelm him. The story slows down here, but the action absolutely does not.
This is classic Punisher violence: loud, messy, and relentless.
Still, one major moment stands out.

Frank gets the chance to chase down Ma Gnucci, but instead chooses to save a diner owner and her young daughter. For the first time in a long time, Frank prioritizes protecting innocent people over revenge.
That choice may define who he becomes next in the MCU.
The special closes with Frank confronting the same thug who killed the homeless man’s dog earlier in the story. After returning the homeless man’s stolen hat, Frank hears him quietly say:
“That’s not all he took.”
Frank responds the only way the Punisher knows how: with deadly force.
What Comes Next?
Disney says the special takes place between Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
That timeline feels a little strange.
Frank behaves very differently here compared to his appearance in Born Again. While a lot could have happened off-screen, this story feels like it would fit more naturally between The Punisher series and Daredevil: Born Again.
Even so, the special does a strong job evolving Frank’s character. He starts as a man ready to die after completing his revenge mission, but ends as someone willing to protect others instead of simply punishing criminals.
That evolution could set up an interesting role for him in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
At the same time, this story feels big enough that it probably could have worked better as an 8-episode miniseries. More time exploring Frank’s completed mission and psychological collapse would have made the emotional moments hit even harder.
Final Verdict
The Punisher: One Last Kill is dark, violent, and surprisingly emotional.
While the timeline placement feels awkward, the special delivers a compelling look at Frank Castle after revenge no longer gives his life meaning. The action is brutal, but the real focus is whether Frank can become something more than a vengeance-driven killer.
