The Bereftest Club
Simon and the ghosts determine the place in the hole in Mr. Martin’s scar is actually a church rather than a house. Meanwhile, Maddie, Xavier, Nicole and Claire are stuck in detention while the rest of the class goes on the Senior Trip. And Mr. Martin and Quinn experiment and temporarily lose their inhibitions.
Warning: Spoilers below
Down in the Scar
The episode picks up with Simon still in the scar and he’s seen another ghost that grabs his head to show him the past. Wally jumps in to rescue Simon. As they break away, Simon drops Mr. Martin’s watch which serves as his key to the scar. Neither Simon nor Wally notice this. The pair then flee to safety. Meanwhile, Simon has learned that the extra layer of the scar is not a house but a church after he found a hymnal down there.

Meanwhile, Maddie, Nicole, Claire and Xavier arrive at the school for detention while the rest of the senior class leaves for their trip. Maddie talks to the ghosts and learns about the scar. Wally lies and tells her he’s the only one who went into the scar as she’s clearly worried about something happening to Simon since he’s still living. Maddie wants more time to investigate what’s going on, but Simon storms off saying he’s going to look for himself. He’s getting anxious about being stuck in the school.
The Breakfast Club
The principal arrives in the school cafeteria and takes the cell phones away from the livings. He gives them an assignment to recount everything that happened the night the school was lit up like the Fourth of July. It’s very reminiscent of The Breakfast Club. However, Mr. South is out of the hospital and shows up to tell the principal that the school superintendent was at the school. This allows the group to split up as they focus on new tasks.

Maddie goes to find Simon. She doesn’t want him to do anything that will get him hurt. Simon’s parents have been asking for communication from him, so Nicole goes to find an old podcast Simon hosted to work some audio into a voice message for his parents. Claire looks at the hymnal and recognizes it’s in Finnish. As she’s of Finnish descent, she goes to research that clue. Meanwhile, Xavier gets stuck working on the assignment despite being the worst student of the bunch.
Wild Mushrooms
While the seniors were getting ready to leave for their trip, Yuri was listening to band members who couldn’t find something they planned to bring on the trip. It turns out, they lost a bag of mushrooms. Yuri goes to find it and runs into Mr. Martin. He explains what the psychedelics do and offers some to the man who was clearly just a straight-laced teacher in life. Mr. Martin takes some and then Quinn shows up behind them and takes some herself. Quinn just took four doses and it’s going to be a wild day for Quinn.

Mr. Martin and Quinn realize they don’t ever remember their past. Mr. Martin talks about not remembering his mother’s face. Quinn does a full choreographed dance routine while Mr. Martin sees his mother but never her face, so he goes to follow her all around the school. The pair are releasing their inhibitions and just following the mushrooms.
Investigations
Maddie goes looking for Simon but finds Wally. She discusses her struggles. She’s frustrated with Simon, but he overhears and is hurt. She’s also battling PTSD from her time with the ghosts. Wally suggests she think about a scene from her favorite movie when she feels like she’s about to crash. Maddie then runs into Mr. South and explains that she knows he saw something and that she sees things too. He takes her to the edge of the property where he shows her a cornerstone that emits a unique energy. He thinks it’s connected to everything weird at the school.

Claire has been studying the Finnish Church clue and Rhonda and Charlie are also there and read it over her shoulder. Meanwhile, Nicole has figured out how to send audio of Simon’s voice to his parents. However, they are all about to be in big trouble when Xavier sends out a warning for everyone to get back to the library.
Secrets Revealed
After speaking with Maddie, Wally goes to find Simon who is trying to go back into the scar. They discuss the situation and Simon just wants to get back to his life. He thinks Wally has the watch, not realizing he dropped it in the scar. They realize what happened but Wally knows a way to help Simon. He suggests they enter through his scar and go the long way. But he tells Simon a secret he hasn’t told Maddie yet. He has his exit door but hasn’t decided to go through it yet.

While this is going on, Yuri has finally worked up the nerve to enter his scar. He goes in and sees that he mostly feared being stuck in a rut if he were a father. The child was nowhere to be seen, just a rut. Meanwhile, Quinn has found Rhonda and Charlie and they notice the effect of the mushroom. Quinn leans in to kiss Rhonda who avoids it and helps her go somewhere until the effects wear off before Rhonda joins Charlie in the cafeteria to talk to Maddie.
History
While the principal is touring the school with the superintendent, the superintendent is pointing out everything wrong with the school. She continues her push to demolish the school and build a new one. The principal seems upset because he clearly loves the school in its current form. However, he remembers the students he left in the cafeteria and goes running back (again much like The Breakfast Club.)

The students all get back to the cafeteria and are sitting safely at tables when the principal arrives. He gets called away again and that’s when they discuss what Claire found. She points out the town was once called Still Waters until they split the river. That action led to a flood that destroyed a church that once sat where the school now sits. Nine people including eight kids died in the flood. Mr. Martin has wandered into the room on his mushroom high and remembers his childhood, as he was alive when the split happened. Everyone realizes the ghosts in the church were the kids and the man who was killed in the flood.
Asking for Help
As they leave the school, Maddie starts hallucinating again. She sees a dollhouse that her father built for her on the school grounds. A glass doll drops at her feet, so she picks it up and it cuts her. Then the dollhouse glows red and bursts into flames. Xavier taps her shoulder and she awakens from the hallucination. She’s scared and asks Xavier if she can stay at his house that night. He obliges to help his friend, and former girlfriend.
At the hospital, Maddie’s dad, Dave, is called to a dark part of the building where he meets a very old ghost who was once a nurse at the hospital. She tells him she knows that he, like Wally, has been shown his door and wants to know why he hasn’t left. She also reveals there are some older ghosts that can’t ever leave, ending the episode on that ominous note.
What’s Next?
Things are barrelling out of control. Maddie is struggling with her PTSD. Xavier is stepping up and being a better friend than he ever was a boyfriend as he connected her to her dad and stepped up after he mom left for rehab. Simon wants out of the school and it’s leading to reckless behavior. And it’s clear there are older ghosts who may hurt the friendly spirits we’ve met. The real question now is “why can’t those older ghosts ever leave?” That’s something that’s sure to be answered.
