Warning: Spoilers below
Mr. Martin’s Scar
Claire and Nicole discuss the video of Maddie appearing to be talking to and laughing at no one. They try to work on a plan to protect Maddie, however when Nicole picks her up, Maddie reveals she already saw the video. She tries to shrug it off as no big deal, but it’s clear she’s going through some sort of PTSD following her experience being stuck in the afterlife.

Meanwhile, Simon is still searching for a way out of the afterlife. Since Janet’s ascension didn’t help, he decided to go into Mr. Martin’s scar to talk to him. Martin hallucinates a boy asking him what happened to him. It also starts snowing in the scar and Mr. Martin looks terrified. Simon leaves the scar to talk to the other ghosts and mentions the fear on Martin’s face. He suggests letting Martin out of his scar, but the other ghosts are not very receptive.
At the Hospital
Xavier returns to the hospital to talk to Kyle, the ghost he met in the previous episode. Kyle reveals he was a student killed in the bus crash that killed the band kids, including Quinn. Kyle says he survived the crash but died on the operating table which is why he’s at the hospital instead of the school. He tells Xavier that someone ran in front of the bus causing the bus to crash. This contradicts the official story of the bus sliding on black ice. Kyle also asks Xavier to track down Tracy, another girl in the band who he liked. He wanted to make sure she survived the crash. Xavier agrees as long as Kyle tracks down Dave, Maddie’s dad.

Back at the school, the ghosts see Maddie’s classmates watching the video of Maddie. Wally gets upset because he knows she was talking to him at the time and he feels responsible for people thinking she’s crazy. He follows them into the girl’s bathroom and tries to get dirt on them. Rhonda joins him and the pair listen as Livia admits to taking the video. They relay the information to Maddie, so she has ammo in her fight against her bullies.
Talking to Simon
Simon and the ghosts work on a new plan to try to get him free. They try to overload the afterlife by having all the ghosts on school grounds go into their scars. Simon isn’t optimistic but he’s still willing to try anything. Meanwhile, Quinn and Yuri both start acting weird. Yuri is hesitant to go into his scar and Charlie notices Yuri staring at a boy in the senior class. Meanwhile, Quinn refuses to try to get the band kids to go into their scars. Instead, Simon goes to talk to them and they refuse to leave their loops.

Maddie heads down to the boiler room to talk to Simon about the situation and asks Claire and Nicole to watch the door. Simon tells her the new plan and his pessimism. He’s continuing to push for Mr. Martin to be let out of his scar. Maddie doesn’t think it’s a good idea. He also tells her about Janet ascending and she seems happy for Janet. She discusses her PTSD and mentions a girl named Sabrina, whose name she saw on his ipad. He’s supposed to be on a trip to visit, so his parents aren’t worried about him. Simon reveals that Sabrina is his sister. They have the same biological mother and were adopted. Maddie doesn’t know why he didn’t tell her and he reveals she went missing right around the time he found out. As this happens, the principal finds her alone in the boiler room.
Maddie Bullied
At the hospital, Xavier is talking more with Kyle. He says he hasn’t learned more about Tracy yet. Kyle also says he hasn’t found Dave. It seems like he may have just disappeared. Xavier talks about asking Quinn about Tracy and Kyle says there was no girl named Quinn in the band. This raises questions, so Xavier immediately calls Maddie who is waiting in the principal’s office. Xavier explains there was no Quinn in the band. Charlie saw Maddie and tried to talk to her but she couldn’t hear him because no one died in that area of the school. But Charlie hears Xavier and starts talking to the other ghosts. Wally and Yuri are ready to investigate her but Rhonda isn’t happy.

In the principal’s office, he asks Maddie about what’s going on and she says she needed some privacy. She also claims to have released the video of her talking to “herself” to cut off the bullies. Another student hears this and starts texting other classmates, circulating that around the school. It cuts out Livia’s leverage but makes others even more angry at Maddie. Later, the seniors are taking their school pictures when someone throws fake blood on Maddie. She tells the photographer to just take the picture. Quinn is in the area and sees Maddie and it inspires her.
Quinn and Mr. Martin
While searching for Quinn, Simon ends up in her scar and sees the tragic consequences of what happened to the band kids. He also notices the snow and gets scared. Later, he brings Mr. Martin out of his own scar to talk to the other ghosts and Maddie. Meanwhile, Charlie confronts Yuri about the boy he keeps staring at. Yuri tells Charlie that boy may be his grandson. But they can’t continue the conversation because all the others arrive. Quinn talks about why the other ghosts can’t find her in the yearbooks. She admits her name is Jacqueline and she faked being sick on picture days to avoid the yearbook because she wasn’t comfortable with who she was. She says she chose the name Quinn when she broke out of her loop for a fresh start.

Meanwhile, Mr. Martin talks about playing with his friends when they were kids but one of them was struck by lightning. He ran away and the boy disappeared. No one found him. Later, after becoming a ghost, Mr. Martin found a pathway to more ghosts, including his friend, and got sucked in. He fought his way out and wound up outside in front of the band bus. Despite being a ghost, the driver must’ve seen him causing the bus to spin out. He blames himself for the band kids’ deaths. But Simon only wants to know how to get to these other ghosts.
What’s Next?
This is already a dark series and it’s taken a darker turn that seems to be making things even better. Instead of body possession, there’s now an alive person stuck in the afterlife. There are ghosts who appear to be far more nefarious than Mr. Martin at work. And Maddie may be back in her body, but she can now be attacked by others physically, mentally and emotionally. Plus, after time in the afterlife, she’s struggling to be part of the living world and the ghostly world.
There are a lot of questions that will be answered as the show continues. What does Yuri mean that a boy in Maddie’s class may be his grandson. What’s next for Maddie? How can Simon get free? And what will happen to the school both from the ghostly world and the living world? This show is delivering quickly.
