Warning: Spoilers Below

Connor the Downtrodden

The McAllisters are eating dinner but Connor is refusing to eat with them. He’s still heartbroken. Georgie goes to check on him, pointing out he’s been dumped before and knows how it feels. Mandy tells him they got back together and are married with a baby now, so he can let that go. Georgie goes to talk with Connor who tells him everything was going great in his relationship with Chloe until the pregnancy scare. At that point, he was no longer a struggling musician but a man without a job who wasn’t ready to be a parent. Connor reacts with anger because Chloe doesn’t have her life together either.

The rest of the family works together to try to help Connor through his struggles. Connor wants to win Chloe back, but Mandy and Georgie work to stop him from calling her. Georgie stays up and babysits Connor to make sure he doesn’t call. Unfortunately, Georgie falls asleep and wakes up to Connor yelling and hanging up the phone. He called her and it made things worse. Still, Connor makes a decision for his future.

A Needed Day

Connor approaches Mandy and asks her to help him with his resume. This leads to a struggle because Connor realizes that he has very few special skills and no real education. Mandy offers him a beer and the two start day-drinking. Jim comes in and finds his kids drinking and joins them for a beer. He empathizes with his son, showing a true bond between them that was missing prior and talks about his first breakup.

Audrey comes home to find the three McAllisters playing beer pong while discussing their previous and current heartaches. Audrey can’t relate because she was always the dumper rather than the dumpee. She starts playing with them and the four have a family day together that was necessary for Connor but probably for all of them. Georgie comes home from the shop to find them all drunk. He opens a beer and drinks with them but since he’s still sober, he can talk them out of bad ideas like burning all of Chloe’s stuff that she left at Connor’s place. Still, Connor has some peace and makes a decision about his future.

Connor’s Plan

Connor thanks Mandy for the day and decides to buckle down and focus on his music. He plans to send a demo tape to Dr. Demento, a radio DJ who specialized in obscure, novelty songs. A montage shows Connor working hard and he comes down to play his song about his heartache to the family. Mandy, Georgie and Audrey all seem supportive, but Jim doesn’t understand the song. He still encourages his son to chase his dream but tells Audrey that Connor will live with them forever. Connor sends the tape off and the episode ends with Dr. Demento listening to the demo and he seems to like it.

What’s Next?

While a bit of divergence from the struggles of Georgie and Mandy, this is one of the strongest episodes of the series, so far. A lot of shows have periphery characters who end up so strong they have to have major storylines. For Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage, that character is Connor. He shows up and shines every time we see him. If there ends up being another spinoff from this, I bet he’s the one who gets a show.
