warning: spoilers below
Depression
Mandy is watching the news and she’s not happy with her replacement as meteorologist. The woman is similar to Mandy in a lot of ways: young, pretty, blonde. Mandy doesn’t like she’s essentially being replaced by a “newer model” and sinks into a depression. Meanwhile, her mother is asking her if she has any special plans like a board game night or a shower.

Georgie keeps trying to support his wife through her struggles. He encourages her that she’ll get another job. However, she sent her audition tape to every station between Medford and Houston and no one has responded. As someone who works in local news, her on air reaction would lead to that kind of response from pretty much every nearby. If she wants a job in television, she’s going to have to leave her small corner of Texas. Audrey decides to change the subject to Georgie’s upcoming 21st birthday.
Family Celebrations
Mary reaches out to Mandy to see what she’s going to do for Georgie’s birthday. Mandy tells her there’s no plans and Mary immediately thinks it’s a surprise party and Georgie’s in the room until Mandy explains there’s really no plans yet. Mary offers to cook a special dinner since her oldest child is 21 and Mandy appreciates it. Missy then calls her sister-in-law and says Mandy can throw Georgie a true party at her friend’s house. Mandy is quick to catch on that Missy is trying to manipulate her into throwing a party with booze for teenagers and shuts it down.

Audrey is looking for gift ideas for Georgie and suggests a money clip in the shape of Texas. Mandy shuts it down talking about his velcro wallet. At the dinner, Mandy gives Georgie the money clip. This is kinda shady as she’s stolen her mother’s gift idea. She also didn’t talk it over with Mary who had gotten Georgie a new velcro wallet. While Mary is fawning over Georgie, Mandy starts drinking. This won’t be good for later.
A Night to Forget
When Georgie went to work, he told Ruben he was going to be leaving early for his birthday. Ruben realizing he was going to be 21 told him it’s a necessity for him to go to a bar to celebrate. Given that Mandy isn’t in the mood to celebrate, Ruben offers to take Georgie after his birthday party with his mother. Georgie wants to bring Mandy along so she can get out of the house a bit.

At the bar, Mandy is already tipsy from starting to drink at the dinner. She and Georgie order tequila. The scene cuts to Mandy passed out on her bed, waking up and not knowing what happened. Mandy goes downstairs where Audrey tells her that she and Georgie were arguing when they got home and then Georgie slept on the couch. Jim comes from unclogging the toilet where Georgie’s money clip had been flushed. Audrey knows Mandy stole her gift idea, but Mandy now has to connect the dots on everything that happened that she can’t remember.
Flashbacks
Mandy tries to figure out what she did. She goes to her brother who asks her the last thing she remembers. She says she went to the jukebox. That’s when she’s able to piece together that she was drinking heavily and acting like a jerk. She calls the shop to apologize. Georgie isn’t there but Ruben answers and he’s mad about how she acted too. Ruben says they were playing pool until she stabbed him with a pool cue. He also says Georgie got mad at her when he found her on the pay phone. Mandy figures out who she called.

Mandy gives her old boss, and former boyfriend, Scott, a call. He explains that she was begging for her job back. He says it’s nice to hear from her sober in the daytime. That conversation ended when Georgie caught her on the phone talking to Scott. There was nothing beyond groveling for work, so Mandy decides to talk to Georgie.
Apology
Mandy goes to see Georgie at the shop. She apologizes and insists that she was only calling Scott to beg for her job back. Georgie tells her that she already explained that the previous night. She asks why he’s still mad at her if she apologized. He explains that it’s what happened on the ride home from the bar. She thinks it’s about vomiting in his truck, but it’s a lot worse.

While drunk she was angry at Georgie for being more successful at 21 than she is in her 30s. She’s angry about how young he is and jealous that she doesn’t have success. Georgie tells her he’s happy she didn’t because if she were successful, they never would’ve met. She would be off somewhere else, and who knows where he would be. And there would certainly be no Cici. She’s flattered that their life together means so much to him, but there’s still some obvious underlying issues that will lead to the eventual end of their marriage.
What’s Next?
This is one of the funnier episodes this season. Georgie and Mandy are always going to have some issues related to their age difference. However, this one calls to another major issue with the age difference, how it will negatively affect their psyches. This time, it’s Mandy’s psyche struggling. Other times, it will be Georgie’s psyche that suffers. As both get older, it’ll be easier to navigate. However, they won’t make it that long on this go. Mandy’s frustration with Georgie’s age while he’s working hard and becoming successful with breed jealousy. It makes for good comedy but a terrible marriage.
