Warning: spoilers below

Corvette Excitement

Matt is hyping up a new customer bringing in a corvette for them to customize. Both Stitch and Gabe are excited about working on the car. The three work together on a presentation to ensure they get the customer to agree to sign with them. They keep going over the ins and outs until the customer comes in. Matt and Gabe are still excited, but there’s a noticeable shift in Stitch’s behavior.

The customer reveals he and Stitch know each other. Matt and Gabe keep to their pitch to win the customer, but Stitch becomes very standoffish. Still, Matt and Gabe are able to sway the customer. Once it’s done, Stitch makes it very clear he won’t work on that car, but he refuses to say why, leaving Matt and Gabe confused.

Loyalty Tested

Matt has Gabe ask Stitch why he won’t work on the car. Stitch refuses to say why and just asks to let it be left alone. Eventually, Gabe decides he will stand by Stitch and not work on the car either. Once the car is brought in, Matt tries to do everything himself but messes up the upholstery sewing. Eventually, he decides to put his foot down as a boss. He tells both Stitch and Gabe that they have until the next morning to decide about their futures. Either they work on the car, or they look for new jobs.

The next morning, Stitch is sitting by the car when Matt arrives. He tells Matt he’s more loyal to Matt, and he will work on the car but not like it. Stitch talks about Matt giving him a job when no one else would, and Matt tells him he hired Stitch because he’s the best. Gabe comes in to stand by whatever decision Stitch has made. Matt and Stitch were going to let him beg before telling him Stitch will work on the car. The customer comes in to finalize everything and explains he and Stitch were into the same girl and he got her. Matt seems to be accepting of this until the customer tells him the timeframe it happened. Stitch is a veteran and this guy took his girlfriend while he was serving in Afghanistan. Matt throws him out of the shop and sends the car away choosing loyalty to his friend over business.

Klatch Kart Carter

Meanwhile, Carter is going through some hard times. He got fired from his job and was told he isn’t cut out for the video game industry. Riley goes down to talk to his boss and ends up hiring him to work at the Klatch Kart. Unfortunately, this backfires tremendously as he’s not a very good employee. He doesn’t do the hard work and gives away some free coffee leading to a major problem. Riley talks it over with Matt and admits she would fire him if he weren’t her son.

The next day, sits Carter down and tells him everything he does wrong. She shows she’s a smart business owner by firing him, but immediately regrets it as a mother and offers to take him to the mall to get ice cream. Eventually, he apologizes to his former employer, promises to do the dirty work and gets his old job back.

What’s Next?

While Matt can be gruff, this episode perfectly highlights his best qualities. He’s excited to be working on this classic car. Instead of being standoffish, he’s pleasant and you can see why people would like him. He also shows how he was successful as a businessman when he puts his foot down (before learning the reason Stitch didn’t want to work on the car) and gives Riley advice to fire her own son. And finally, he shows loyalty means more than business when he stands up for Stitch. He needed to know the reason, because sometimes businessmen have to service bad people and throwing them out is a bad idea. He waited until he knew it was a good idea and made the move to support his staff.

This is one of the better episodes of the series. While Riley and Carter’s story is fine and Georgia is just there, Matt and Stitch shine in this episode. Tim Allen and Darryl “Chill” Mitchell know each other from appearing together in Galaxy Quest, and it’s clear they have a good relationship behind the scenes that has blossomed into a wonderful chemistry on screen. Their interactions are some of the best in the series.
