TV Money

Mandy finally gets a good paycheck from her work on tv and decides to treat herself to a spa day. This causes friction with Jim who starts to feel like his daughter is taking advantage of his generosity. This friction leads to fights between Mandy and Georgie.

Mandy’s Paycheck

Mandy comes in with her “tv money” and is very excited about the paycheck she received. She says she wants to treat herself to a spa day. This frustrates her father. Georgie, Mandy and Cici are living rent free in their house and he would appreciate it if she had offered to pay a little rent. He didn’t want to accept it, he just wanted to be offered. Audrey picks up on the tension and tells Jim he shouldn’t worry about it.

Jim talks with Georgie at the shop the next day, and Georgie doesn’t mind overall that Mandy wants to go to the spa. However, he can tell that Jim isn’t happy about not being offered the money and tries to get worked up, so Jim can yell. He goes home and suggests to Mandy that they treat her parents to a nice dinner they cook for them. This sets off red flags and Mandy is now upset with her father.

Mandy vs. Jim

Mandy confronts Jim about his feelings and pushes back against her wanting to treat herself. Audrey steps in and points out that Jim has spoiled Mandy since she was a little girl, so she’s come to expect she doesn’t have to do certain things. Eventually, Mandy gives Jim a check for rent which he accepts despite not wanting to do so. He just wanted her to acknowledge what he and Audrey were doing for her and Georgie.

At the shop, the next day, Jim tries to give Georgie the money back, but Georgie thinks he and Mandy should start paying their way and refuses to accept it. Jim threatens to give Georgie a raise to make up for it and Georgie pushes back. Meanwhile, Ruben, another employee at the shop, is shocked to learn that Georgie doesn’t pay rent and that Jim won’t let him pay rent with Ruben noting, “I’ve got to marry into a white family.”

Audrey Calls Out Jim

Audrey and Jim talk about the situation, and Audrey points out that she understands why Mandy wants to treat herself since she raised their kids while Jim built the business. Jim thinks raising kids is just playing with them, not knowing the other work that entails. Audrey tells Jim if he thinks it’s easy, he should spend the day with Cici and let Mandy have a break. Jim agrees, not knowing what he just got himself into, and Audrey takes Mandy to the spa day, where they get to be pampered while Jim works hard to take care of his granddaughter.

Connor’s Girlfriend

Meanwhile, Connor’s girlfriend seeks to stay with him claiming her apartment building is being fumigated and she needs a place to stay for a few days. Connor is reluctant, because he says he’s weird and needs time to himself to be weird. However, he agrees and the pair spend a lot of time together. This pushes Connor over the edge to where he asks her to leave because he needs alone time.

The pair start fighting and that’s when it’s revealed that his girlfriend is actually homeless. She’s been staying on a friend’s couch until her friend kicked her out. They agree to be weird together and he lets her stay with him. She insists it’ll only be for a few days, but I get the feeling she’s just moved in with him and he won’t know how to handle it.

Rating

This was Audrey’s best episode of the entire series, so far. She’s been set up as the main antagonist due to her opposition to Georgie. Her reasoning may make sense, but since he’s the main character, she’s the main villain. However, she’s completely reasonable here. She raised kids and knows Mandy needs the break. She also knows that Jim gave Mandy anything she wanted whenever she batted her eyes at him since she was a kid and that he’ll give in to her. She comes across like a normal person in this episode rather than the worst tropes about a mother-in-law. Plus, the episode shows more growth for Connor’s character which is always a plus.
