A Pregnancy Test and an Old Man's Gallbladder

Mandy asks for more responsibility at work, but it comes with a caveat that doesn’t make Georgie very happy. Meanwhile, Jim and Audrey have to have an important conversation with Connor.

Warning: Spoilers below

Mandy’s New Role

Mandy goes to see her boss, Scott, who is also her ex-boyfriend, to discuss the fact that a competing station is allowing its meteorologist to do some human interest stories. Scott shuts her down, because their station has an older reporter who already does those stories, and he won’t take those away from the reporter. Mandy gets frustrated and goes home to talk to Georgie. He doesn’t want to talk about her ex until he learns she’s annoyed. Then, he’s happy to jump on the bashing Scott campaign.

Georgie encourages her to look at other stations, preferably one where her ex-boyfriend isn’t also her boss. However, things take a turn when Scott tells Mandy that she will be covering a meteor shower. The older reporter had to have surgery, so he’s giving her the opportunity she wants. There’s a catch though. It’s an overnight trip meaning she will be going away with her ex-boyfriend, who will be producing it.

Georgie’s Reaction

Mandy comes home and tells Georgie about the story she’s getting to cover. He’s excited until she reveals that Scott will be going with her. He’s not happy, and his jealousy comes through. He tries to talk her out of it, but she’s putting her career first, as she should. He’s angry which causes problems with a customer. Ruben talks to him and gives him a comforting ear since Ruben also sees an issue with someone going on an overnight trip with an ex.

Georgie goes down to the station to talk to Scott. They have a discussion, and Georgie is frustrated with how likable and understanding Scott can be. He goes home and thinks everything is okay until Mandy comes in and yells at him for going to her work. Her anger is valid as his actions are possessive, plus they could’ve cost her the role. It didn’t and she gets to cover the meteor shower, but it was too big of a risk to take with someone else’s career. Mandy goes to cover the meteor shower and is very awkward on air since she knew so little about meteors before getting the assignment.

Meanwhile, Georgie makes her jealous by telling Cici all the things they will do together while her mother is away. Everything works out but there are some more clear issues, including Georgie’s immaturity and jealousy that will lead to the end of the marriage.

Connor’s Story

In the B-plot, Audrey finds a pregnancy test in Connor’s trash can. She doesn’t know the results, but she’s worried. She already had to help Mandy through an unexpected pregnancy and doesn’t know how to react to it possibly happening with Connor. Plus, Connor doesn’t fit in with societal norms and this is the 90s. She’s worried he won’t be able to handle being a father. Jim goes and buys the pregnancy test and learns the results means no pregnancy. Audrey then goes to talk to Connor who responds angrily in a way that’s beyond what to expect from him leaving Audrey hurt and confused.

Jim has been trying to avoid this conversation during the entire episode, but he eventually goes to talk to Connor following Connor’s outburst. Jim tells Connor he needs to apologize to his mother and asks about Chloe. Connor reveals Chloe broke up with him after the pregnancy scare because she realized she didn’t want to have kids with him. It’s clear that Connor is heartbroken as he has struggled to find relationships due to his eccentricities, and while he wasn’t ready for a child either, losing that relationship makes him feel like he’ll never find love again. Jim finally shows himself to be a loving father to Connor as he just holds his son while Connor cries.

What’s Next?

The issues keep festering for Georgie and Mandy, and it becomes more and more obvious with each and every episode why the marriage will eventually collapse. Mandy is in her 30s and looking to advance in her career. She wants more than just to be a stay-at-home mom. Meanwhile, Georgie is a hard worker and eventually becomes a good businessman, but he’s only 20 years old. He’s immature and jealous. He doesn’t know how to be a good boyfriend yet, much less a good husband. Still, they are finding ways to make their issues funny for the audience.

In contrast, Connor is the emotional core of the episode and seems to be anchoring the entire series. His eccentricities scream neurodivergence, and anyone who has ever worked with neurodivergent people knows the 90s were not a great time for them. He’s going to struggle and he’s the character that’s easiest for viewers to get invested. This may be Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage, but Connor is carrying a lot of the show on his back.
