A Will and a Dead Man's Wife

Georgie starts acting like a petulant child when his mother goes on her first date since his father’s passing. Meanwhile, Jim and Audrey discuss their own future and how their children will handle anything they inherit.

Setting Up Mary

Mary and Missy are having dinner with the McAllisters when it comes around that Meemaw wants to set Mary up on a date. Mandy questions her about the situation and, along with Missy, encourages her to go on the date. Georgie, meanwhile, is pushing back. He’s clearly uncomfortable with his mother dating someone that isn’t his father. It’s a hard situation, because Mary has been grieving and deserves to move on, but Georgie still misses his dad and can’t see his mother with anyone else.

Eventually, Mary agrees to the date and ends up having a nice time. Mandy encourages her to see the man again and agrees not to tell Georgie. Still, Georgie calls the house while she’s on her second date and Missy lets the cat out of the bag. Georgie confronts his mother and is upset about the situation. After an argument with his mother, he asks Pastor Jeff for some guidance, but Pastor Jeff isn’t pushing back against Mary’s happiness.

Sibling Rivalry

Mary prays about the situation and isn’t sure how she is going to keep dating this man given how Georgie is reacting. Missy overhears her prayers and skips school the next day to confront him at the shop. He’s not there and she relays everything to Ruben. He gleefully takes in every word she says so he can deliver it to Georgie exactly like she does. Georgie keeps pushing back, demonstrating the worst traits that will lead to the end of his marriage.

Georgie goes over to his mother’s house to speak to her some more when he sees her on another date. She’s talking and laughing and seems genuinely happy. It’s a sight he hasn’t seen since before his father died. He may not be comfortable with the situation, but he’s not about to take this away from his mother. It’s a moment of growth for a man who is still not even 21 years old in the show’s timeline.

McAllisters’ Will

This talk about moving on after death makes Jim and Audrey discuss what will happen to the money they made from selling the shop if something happens to them. Both of them recognize major issues that Mandy and Connor have with money and how a sudden financial windfall may be an issue. Jim brings up something that Audrey will hate, but Georgie is more responsible than either of their children.

Jim and Audrey drop subtle questions to their kids and Connor and Mandy keep messing up basic answers. Meanwhile, Georgie offers a responsible answer that makes Jim proud but frustrates Audrey. In the end, the couple decide they should spend their money on themselves before dying and leave Connor and Mandy with nothing. When Jim runs off to tell them, Audrey rushes after saying she wants to be there.

What’s Next?

This episode brought out some of Georgie’s worst qualities but in a way that is completely understandable. Many times, widows or widowers may be ready to go on a date again before their children are ready. Georgie, being the oldest, should understand this, but he’s the one pushing back the most. It’s unclear what Sheldon thinks about this as he doesn’t appear in the episode as he’s off in California, but Missy is being very supportive. It’s a nice twist given how much Missy has been pushing back on her mother toward the end of Young Sheldon and in their appearances on Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage.

When you have a heavy subject like this, you need a reliable B-plot to drive the comedy. Despite the fact it’s talking about death, the McAllisters’ storyline provides the necessary levity. Jim and Audrey have more money now than they ever imagined. They want to take care of everything, but Mandy and Connor have made horrible decisions in the past and don’t seem to be ready to make the right ones now. It’s funny that Georgie is more responsible than either one of them but seems fitting given we see Georgie becoming a successful businessman by the events of The Big Bang Theory. It’ll just be interesting to see how these negative qualities of both Georgie and Mandy lead to their eventual divorce.
