A Tie Breaker and a Huge Mistake

Georgie and Ruben are struggling as business partners who have taken over Jim’s business. Meanwhile, Jim learns retirement isn’t what he thought it would be.

Warning: Spoilers Below

Dr. Tire

Georgie and Ruben are now working together but they have two entirely different views of how to run a business. Georgie thinks it's about people and passion. Ruben thinks it's about numbers. Both have half the equation but don’t understand the need for the other half. Georgie wants to replace the paper inventory system with a computer that will help them organize better. Ruben thinks it costs too much. Both have valid points, but they need to listen to the other.

Georgie also hints at his own future. He thinks about renaming the shop. He wants to move away from the McAllister family name and suggests “Dr. Tire.” This is important because Dr. Tire is the name of the chain of stores he owns when he’s seen in The Big Bang Theory. Being a prequel, we’ve seen his future and know he’ll eventually be successful. It’s not clear, however, if this venture will be a success.

Boring Retirement

Back at home, Jim talks about all the things he’s going to do since he’s retired. He gets to work tackling all the projects he hadn’t been able to do previously. And he completes them all in one day and quickly gets bored. He tries to leech on to Audrey and Mandy. He finally gets the vintage car running, but has many issues when he loses his hat, tries to put the convertible top up but can’t, and the car breaks down, so he ends up walking home and gets a sunburn, the one thing he was trying to avoid. It’s clear Jim may not want to be running his own auto shop anymore, but he needs something to do.

Compromise

Jim goes down to the shop and talks to Georgie and Ruben. He buys a pizza and talks over their issues while pushing for compromise. He suggests they lease a computer for a short time to see if it actually works. It costs less than buying one outright and they can determine if it’s actually worth a long term investment. It’s good advice but there’s still a problem. They still can’t decide how they are going to go about leasing the computer.

After Mandy suggests flipping a coin, Ruben shoots down kids' games as a way to make business decisions. They decide to have a foot race instead. This leads to some funny visual gags as they run behind Jim during his struggles with his vintage car. This also causes them to not be at the shop when Jim needs a tow. Something that Mandy points out as a big business problem going forward.

What’s Next?

This is the first of many speed bumps that Georgie will face as a business owner. It’s also curious to see what will happen with this business, how he evolves into Dr. Tire and what will happen with his partnership with Ruben. Ruben is attending business school at night and knows certain things not to do. He also doesn’t want to lose the money he has invested in the business since he lives with his grandmother. Plus, Georgie used his mother’s house as collateral. Plus, it’s not clear yet how this business will impact Georgie and Mandy’s marriage.

Meanwhile, Mandy took a bit of a back seat in this episode. She was there as a partner for Georgie and had humorous interactions with her parents. But there’s more she can do. Let’s just hope we see more of her in the forefront going forward.
