Daredevil: Born Again - Season 2 Episode 2 Review

SHOOT THE MOON

The Anti-Vigilante Task Force keeps hunting vigilantes and those helping them while also rounding up regular citizens who they deem as “taking things too far.” Meanwhile, Mayor Fisk praises Matt Murdock in a way that prevents him from going anywhere as himself or as Daredevil.

Warning: Spoilers below.

Bullseye

The episode picks up right where the first episode ended with Cherry being rushed to the hospital following his heart attack. Both Cherry and Daredevil survived thanks to Bullseye taking out the entire task force team that arrived at Cherry’s place. Fisk knows that Bullseye is helping Daredevil, but he isn’t really sure why. But Bullseye’s target is something that will drive Fisk crazy, Vanessa.

DISNEY

Bullseye heads down to the church to talk to Sister Maggie, an old nun introduced in the original Daredevil series who happens to be Matt Murdock’s mother. She’s not there, so Bullseye goes about his business. He kills two more task force members at the hospital as they seemed ready to hurt Cherry. He also keeps setting up shop outside wherever Vanessa is at, whether it’s her home with Fisk or when she’s out to dinner with Matt’s ex-girlfriend, Heather. Bullseye looks to be a real problem for Fisk and Vanessa going forward.

White Tiger

In the first season, Matt Murdock defended the vigilante known as the White Tiger in court. His identity, Hector Ayala, would be revealed and he would be killed by future members of the task force. His widow and their niece, Angela, are headed to a bodega in this episode when they spot a group of teens prepared to steal alcohol. They try to stop them but the bodega owner pulls out a gun. The task force arrives, arrests the teens as thieves, the bodega owner as a vigilante taking the law into his own hands and Angela’s aunt for assaulting an officer for brushing their jacket. It’s a clear abuse of power and every one rounded up is Hispanic. Looks familiar doesn’t it? Angela ends up finding her way to Matt’s old legal partner with the White Tiger medallion. A new vigilante may be on the streets soon.

Kingpin Leaks

Mayor Fisk has another issue, there’s a leak in his office. Viewers saw in episode one about how someone is revealing what’s actually happening. His deputy mayor and his campaign manager are discussing who had access to all of that information and Daniel, the Deputy Mayor, realizes he’s the leak. He also realizes that BB Urich has been getting the information from him and she’s writing under a different name to get the truth out while blowing smoke up Fisk’s ass, under her real name, to stay safe.

DISNEY

Daniel tries a charm offensive to get her to stop because he understands that if Fisk figures out it’s her, that she and he will be in deep trouble. Still, BB sends out another video revealing what’s going on and the episode shows her taking off the Kingpin mask confirming she’s trying to take him down, likely due to the murder of her uncle way back on the first season of the original series.

Recognizing a Hero

Daredevil has been a thorn in Fisk’s side and he’s looking for a way to stop him. Fisk’s advisors suggest he reveal that Matt Murdock is Daredevil and get people looking for him. Fisk shrugs that off because he understands that a blind lawyer provides hope to people and when you add in that Murdock jumped in front of a bullet meant for Fisk, there’s no way for Murdock to be viewed as anything other than a hero. That gives Fisk an idea.

DISNEY

Mayor Fisk goes on tv and talks about the attempted assassination. He talks about how Murdock saved his life but has disappeared since a group of people converged on his apartment. Fisk tells the public he thinks Murdock is alive and asks for people to keep an eye out for him. It’s a stroke of brilliance that even Murdock appreciates. He already couldn’t go out as Daredevil very often because of the anti-vigilante crowd. Now he can’t go out as Murdock due to the pro-vigilante crowd. He’s essentially handcuffed.

Finding Daredevil

Daredevil and Karen Page have been trying to figure out how to get to Fisk. They go to where the Northern Star is in the harbor and see how everything is covered up to look like the ship was hauling diapers instead of guns. Matt realizes they are running out of time and decides he needs to get out to Red Hook where Mayor Fisk has his free port. Unfortunately, they aren’t sure how to get there.

DISNEY

The Anti-Vigilante Task Force is going around knocking on doors and dragging out “suspected vigilantes.” It’s a scary thought (and something the US government has suggested ICE start doing if you’re paying attention). They converge on where Matt and Karen are hiding, but Matt is able to suit up and fight off the task force. Meanwhile, Karen flees and ends up having to fight off an officer trying to round her up. Matt can’t find Karen, so he goes to a place they designed to meet up. She gets there and tells them she has something. They go back to Punisher’s lair where she has captured a task force member and has him tied up. The good guys are about to have to do something evil.

What’s Next?

After the first episode delivered an excellent continuation of the first season, episode two kind of falters. There’s no true story arc for this episode. It lets you know where everyone is and where they all seem to be headed but doesn’t really move them anywhere. It’s a great half episode. It does a good job focusing on the serialized storytelling of the season but not a good job of focusing on the episodic storytelling of this individual episode. It was dropped with part three at the same time. Hopefully, the two episodes together make a good episode because this one was only okay.
