The G Word and a Blaspheming Bimbo

Georgie’s mom’s church is hosting a carnival for the community and they want Mandy to try to get it on the news. Mandy is excited at the potential for more time on air, but her opinion ends up rubbing Mary, Pastor Jeff and much of Medford the wrong way, leading to an important decision for Mandy and her family.

Warning: Spoilers Below

Prepping for the Carnival

Mandy stops by the church to bring some canned goods to Mary. While there, Pastor Jeff brings up the church carnival and wants to get the word out. Mandy has done some community focus type of events, so she agrees to pitch it to her News Director so she can get more time on television. This makes both Mary and Pastor Jeff happy, and it appeals to Mandy’s career desires. However, not everyone is happy about this development.

At the McAllister house, Audrey notes she’s covering the Baptist carnival but hasn’t covered any Catholic community events. That’s pushed aside a bit by Jim and Georgie both talking about how fun church carnivals can be. Georgie also comes up with an idea to sponsor a booth at the carnival. He pitches it to Ruben who thinks it’s a good idea. That leads to both being confused since Ruben rarely agrees with Georgie.

Carnival Mishaps

Mandy gets approved for live hits from the carnival. She talks to Georgie who sponsored a booth involving throwing footballs through a tire. Georgie admits to rigging the game which gets him a minor scolding from Mandy about cheating at church. Still, she’s having fun and excited about being on tv, even though both Georgie and Mandy have given her advice about the buttons on her blouse (and it’s conflicting advice, of course.)

Mandy interviews Pastor Jeff, and it seems to be going well until Pastor Jeff refers to God as him. Mandy implies that God can be a woman which leads to some major issues once they get off the air. Pastor Jeff and Mary point out the Bible verses referencing God as “He.” When Georgie and Mandy get back home, it’s clear that Jim and Audrey aren’t too fond of her voicing her opinion either. They may not be Baptist but they know better than to question someone’s religion in a small town in Texas. There’s going to be some fallout from her editorializing.

Punishment

The complaints are coming into the news station. The News Director makes the call to pull Mandy off air until it blows over. Mandy offers to apologize so she doesn’t lose her air time. Unfortunately, she comes across rude and condescending instead of conciliatory, so she ends up suspended. She goes home where she’s receiving hate mail for having a differing view. Georgie talks to his mother about having Mandy apologize to Pastor Jeff, sincerely, on air. Pastor Jeff agrees, but Mandy is hesitant until she reads one of the worse letters sent her way and she quickly agrees.

The night before her interview, Mandy reads one letter from a young girl thanking her and calling her an inspiration. She starts rethinking her choices but decides to go through with the apology. Pastor Jeff does try to quell the attacks but eventually he says something that forces Mandy to defend herself. In doing so, she decides she won’t compromise her views for a job and quits. The episode ends with both Mandy and Audrey asking “what did she do?”

What’s Next?

This is an episode that’s likely to have lasting repercussions for Georgie and Mandy’s marriage. Mandy’s opinion has gotten her on the wrong side of a lot of town. It’s even shown in the episode that it’s negatively affecting Georgie’s business. On top of that, her decision to quit on air like she did hurts them financially too. Yes, they live with her parents, but it’s unclear how long that can last. This is one of the many issues that will ultimately lead to Georgie and Mandy’s first divorce.
